Alexander-Baxter business records [manuscript], 1833-1915.

Account books, check stub books, cancelled checks, and business miscellany kept by Thomas Baxter (to ca. 1854) and his son, William H. Baxter (ca. 1855-1915). The records deal principally with the Blandford Mill Company, the Petersburg Gas Light Company, and the Petersburg Car Company, and reval business activities along thet lines of cotton ginning and construction contracting. The letterbook for 1836-1838 contains a sporadic diary of Thomas Baxter, 1851-1852. Of interest are an account book of the Petersburg Benevolent Mechanics Association, 1849-1866; a commissary record kept by Captain John P. May of Company A, 12th Virginia Volunteers; a rrequisitions record for Petersburg school supplies and textbooks, 1868-1869, with separate pages to record supplies furnished to the high school, "Anderson Seminary," East Ward School, West Ward School and Colored Schools NOs. 1-4; accounts of William H. Baxter as trreasurer of the Old Street Presbyterian Sabbath School, 1869-1871.
